Re: [saveenterprise] Re: Digest Number 1068

Then Spock woke up in a cold sweat, opened his eyes and looked around his familiar, sparsely decorated rooms aboard Enterprise. As he struggled to rise up from his deep, nightmarish slumber, his first thought was of his mother and Vulcan. He quickly got up and sat in front of the communications monitor and directed "Computer" to contact his mother on Vulcan. As Amandas' beautifully serene face appeared on the screen, to his relief, which he tried to surpress, he realized it was all a dream........

Now, can we go back to our regularly scheduled canon? Would it not be so very great if Coto could talk the powers at Paramount/Viacom into doing an Enterprise movie? Even if it was just a TV movie?

Interesting call. Here's my take on it:

Absolutely, Manny Coto should have had a shot at this, considering what he was already putting together as tie-ins with the Original Series for the unfortunately- never-filmed Season 5 of ENTERPRISE. We all remember, however, how a certain suit at Paramount/Viacom was on record as hating ENTERPRISE so much that Season 5 was doomed before it could ever be seriously thought of. No doubt in my mind that Manny would have come up with an original and exciting script for a feature film with the original crew, and still fit it into the original canon. Unfortunately, now we'll never know...

Now, since we HAVE this "reboot", it looks like we're going to have to live with it, but we can at least be thankful that it was as good as it was. Many of my listmates well remember the various posts I put up in the past year or so, decrying the project, and how concerned I was that they would simply botch the whole thing. And yet, while certain parts of the original canon were done away with, Abrams and company gave us a very good, and quite enjoyable film. In fact, I would venture onto some thin ice here, and suggest that Trek XI could have in fact stood on its own without Nimoy's presence - though certainly we all welcomed him.

As stated be3fore, I have a few nit-picks with Trek XI, yet altogether they still do not, IMHO, outweigh the good that's in this film. I do have one point I want to get off my chest however. And no disrespect to Ben Cross, who is a very fine actor (even though I still think Mark Leonard was a far better Sarek!). BUT did anyone feel a little unnerved during the scene in which young Spock "politely" turns down the Vulcan Science Academy in favor of Starfleet, and because the Minister blatantly insulted his mother's heritage, while at the same time, Sarek just sat there, hearing his wife get lambasted for being an off-worlder, having raised a mixed-parentage son on Vulcan, having that same son endure as lot of un-Vulcan-like crap.....AND HE JUST SITS THERE AND SAYS NOTHING????? Should we assume that Sarek was "in" on the Minister possibly "testing" Spock, or was something else going on that might be explored in another film? Impossible to say now I think, but that scene just didn't sit well with me. Sarek never impressed me as the kind of Vulcan who "knew his place". The whole thing with marrying Amanda and raising a mixed-parentage child seems a bit rebellious, don't you think? *G* Wonder how Mark Leonard would have wanted to handle the same scene!

LL&P!

(that's not to say that those elements were cheap ripoff from earlier blockbusters, but that all three drew from universal, mythic archetypes).
