Re: [saveenterprise] Next Star Trek film?

Oh krap, that's right. Rand would be very young at this current time. She would have to play her mother (or grandmother).

well, yes, she could always play her own mother, and also have her as an advisor to starfleet operations,

Just a thought thrown out at the list to see what your thoughts are:

Should Janice Rand be included in the next Star Trek film?
If yes, why, and how do you think her character should be handled?
If no, why not?

[saveenterprise] Re: Next Star Trek film?

Keela,

Agreed! Although the surviving cast of TOS might be a little old for a live performance. Personally, I would love seeing Phlox instructing, or as a guest lecturer, in Starfleet Medical. Or T'Pol as one of the few Vulcans who were off-world when Vulcan was destroyed, perhaps a retired Ambassador? Maybe even - let's hold our breath on this one - Pike introduces Kirk to retired Admiral Archer?

And speaking of Scott Bakula, kudos and best wishes for his new series, "Men of a Certain Age", with Ray Romano!

LL&P,
Dominick

PS - And above all, in the next film, McCoy absolutely MUST say: "He's DEAD, Jim!"

Mike,

I actually addressed this very topic in a short story I wrote for a long-since-defunct ST zine in the 1980's. Simply put, although Janice was portrayed on-screen in TOS as Kirk's personal secretary and gopher (remember, she actually brought him a cup of coffee on the bridge!), I pointed out in my story that the position of Kirk's personal yeoman required her to be a part of Kirk's personal staff, which included all the major department heads of the ship: Spock, McCoy, Scotty, Uhura, and Sulu (and later Chekov). This in turn required the highest of security ratings, not to mention a sturdy psychological profile. Of course, such was not to be portrayed on network TV in the 60's! (BTW, all this applies to Uhura as well). Hopefully, she'll be included, and with a more realistic portrayal.

As to an attraction between her & Kirk, it was always there, but I thought more from her to him than vice versa. However, a major subtext could emerge: examining how much a captain is - and should or should not be - "wedded" to his job.

I think that ALL of the surviving cast should get in on the action, even if it's just a holo-representation or a teaching vid that helps young cadets with their training.

[saveenterprise] Next Star Trek film?

Just a thought thrown out at the list to see what your thoughts are:

Should Janice Rand be included in the next Star Trek film?
If yes, why, and how do you think her character should be handled?
If no, why not?

LL&P,
Dominick
