True. But the closeness would have to been earlier than Amanda's death because of the incident with Spock as a child. An indirect result of the Kelvin's destruction that influenced Sarek to be a kindler, gentler father? Possible, just not explained fully in the film.

I agree. Ben Cross is a great actor, but I don't think how he portrayed Sarek is how Mark Lenard would have done it. According to "Journey to Babel," Spock and Sarek had not spoken to one another in 18 years because Spock decided to go into Starfleet rather than the Vulcan Science Academy. Yet the film shows no hint that Sarek wasn't anything but a supportive father to Spock when a child, when he was accepted to the Academy, or when he was on the Enterprise. Jay Gallops
